The Invisible Working Class
The New Yorker describes Lynn Nottage as having "built a career on making invisible people visible." How does Sweat accomplish this and do you think enabling visibility is important? Why or why not?
Sweat successfully represented invisible people in America. The backbone of America if you will. America thrives off its workers because if no one was doing the difficult stuff and the painstaking labor that workers do every day without complaint America wouldn’t be the America it is today, yet many people have the luxury of not considering the backbone of America or even realizing that they are there. When I order my Amazon packages I don’t think about the workers who are putting in their labor and effort into getting me my order as fast as possible, and the worker who is driving during Christmas making sure that my order is delivered on time. Sweat represents what a major part of America goes through to make ends meet. It reveals the hidden and overlooked difficulty, pain, and struggle that the lower class of America goes through. Sweat does this by focusing on all aspects of the pain and the beauty of the lower class that isn’t covered by mainstream media in society. “I have been jacking all them years and I can count on my hand the number of times they said thank you” (37). Sweat covers the decreasing amount of appreciation that workers receive from the middle class and big corporations, they are so often overlooked and seen as animals rather than humans by companies. People disregard the working class so much that their people are the only ones who will stand up for them. “If I walk away then you got nobody” (74). The play honed in on what it meant to be there for one another. No one is going to stand up for the workers other than their own, and that shows how alone and ignored they are in society. People choose to ignore the working class. “They find it offensive to be on the floor with their Wharton MBAs” (26). Sweat reveals the ignorance that corporations place on their workers. To them, they are less than them and therefore less human. Sweat shows us the struggle that corporations put upon workers and what the decisions of massive companies do to powerless citizens. It is important to increase the "visibility" of these people, those who struggle with drug abuse, those who are treated poorly in work environments, those who don’t who workers' rights, and those who are left homeless. It is important to acknowledge that they are a part of our world and society has to work harder to make sure they are also able to survive and get stable jobs. Many people cannot afford to change their jobs even if the working conditions are horrible. They should not be punished for what they cannot control. Many people cannot even afford to live because of the expenses and exploitation of America. They should receive additional support so they can succeed in life.
