At the start of the year, AP Lang was my most dreaded class, I was uncomfortable and constantly felt scared to speak as the year went on, I was able to become comfortable with sharing my ideas and enjoying the class and its content. I have learned so much throughout this school year and I am grateful that I was able to break through my shell and enjoy taking this class.   I’m extremely grateful to Mili for sticking with me throughout the year, helping me become more comfortable throughout the class, growing with me, and always keeping me company whenever I needed it, and for the conversations we would have after class about the wildest pieces and the late-night messages about homework.    My success in the class would not be possible without the support of Natalie, our late-night Thursday FaceTime calls practicing for the weekly vocab quizzes going in early (Natalie going in early) and asking Mrs. Valentino ...

As life has evolved, every aspect of human life has evolved  with it  - almost nothing has  been left behind . With that, our reliance on these modern aspects of life has increased.  This   in   turn  follows one of the most basic functions humans should rely on.  Memory.  Our minds are brilliant photographers who capture the earth for what is is  but  in the passing generations we don't seem to consider that anymore. Anywhere you go, everyone's phones are out  clicking  picture after picture  trying  to get the perfect shot and angle to post on their social  media,  or  just  take to admire in the near future.  But  what  many don't realize  is  that at some  point  we forget about what's  actually  in front of us and instead focus on preserving it forever.  By not looking at whats in front of us with what nature has given  us  we lo...

Everything Is Connected

We are currently in the 6th mass extinction. It's crazy, we are all gonna die someday, and sometime in the far far far away future we're gonna cease to exist at all. But the reality for many animals and species on planet earth right now is that they are gonna cease to exist in the near near near future. Of the 200 breeds of domesticated animals that have been identified in North America, 80% of them are either declining or are currently facing extinction. 80%. That's a big number which means about 160 species are declining. It is hard to swallow that type of information. The biggest reasons for that are because of ..... HUMANS. Obviously.  Habitat destruction, climate change, and over-harvesting are just a few reasons as to why all these species are going extinct, but many people know this already. The underlying effects of these extinctions are what many people are not aware of.  What happens when these species start disappearing from their respective ecosystems? These ani...

Connecting with Nature

Quote: "Sometimes we forget that nature also means us. Termites build mounds; we build cities. All of our being- juices, flesh, spirit - is nature." Humanity has evolved in so many ways and we have created an artificial world where we find comfort in such as buildings, factories, technology, vehicles, etc. While there is nothing wrong with this and we are just simply living with life's luxuries we tend to forget that though we feel we are not in tune with nature, nature is interconnected with our life and instead of repenting this idea we have to welcome nature and its gifts. After all, we take as much advantage as we can to exploit our Earth's resources and don't care about the hurt we do to it.  When examining the quote, termites and humans don't seem to have any similarities but when considering it further, termites like humans build their environment based on their specific needs by destroying the wood and their natural environment around them, but it is a...

Words

Euphemisms are a very interesting phenomenon. Its sole purpose is to manipulate the language that surrounds it to create an illusion of something entirely different Euphemisms are present in so many parts of our society for good or bad.  Social Acceptance: Many people choose to soften their language when choosing to speak about harsh or sensitive topics. For example "developing countries" instead of "underdeveloped countries". Although the intentions behind softening the meaning of the word are only good, the effect of these euphemisms underscores the importance of the events. People in underdeveloped countries are starving and facing many humanitarian issues and by softening their experience we are invalidating what they are going through. Another example of this is calling people who are "disabled" "special needs".  Though this explanation is easy to understand and many people would agree that euphemisms invalidate the true reality, it is diffi...

Jobs in the US

America was built on rascal values, this is widely known, and the problem of racism has improved so much over the decades but that doesn’t mean it is not still unbearably present in our society.  According to Bowdoin "a study published earlier this year, Assistant Professor of Economics Martin Abel found employers are less likely to call back job applicants with Black-sounding names when presented with identical resumes"  Right now in the 21st century being able to attain a job in this economy is already hard enough but not getting chosen because of race or ethnicity is just double the burden. Even though America has moved past its racist ideals, there is still internalized racism hidden inside many people and it is hindering the success of many people and companies.  "We found that participants systematically discriminated against hob candidates with names they associated with Black People, especially when put under time pressure,"  This shows that even in our...

Analysis of Onion

Image
The Onion article I chose to write about today is "Guy Who Sucks At Being A Person Sees Huge Potential In AI." This article highlights the rapid overtake that recent AI technology has had over the world. The article starts by describing the main character, James Parker, as "a local guy who sucks at being a person" and someone who, by all accounts has never stretched himself to do something he found difficult". This description gives readers the impression that he is generally quite a useless being who doesn’t have anything to show for his life. He doesn't strive for anything and is lazy. Then James is seen to be showing a lot of enthusiasm for AI and thinks this will be very good for humans in the future and that soon humans won't have to do anything at all. The contrast between his description of someone lazy and useless to his excitement about AI shows the irony of the situation. James who is already a lazy being, is given another tool that will promo...
