Satire in American Culture
Reading the satirical essay, "Body Ritual Among the Nacirema", was very eye-opening. At the beginning of reading it, I wasn’t sure what I was reading about and was confused regarding what the text was saying because it sounded so academic. But after finding out the real meaning behind this essay I found it very humorous how weird our practices are and gave me a new perspective to see how what might be normal to me may not always seem so straightforward or logical to others. The satirical tone behind this essay showed me how powerful this rhetorical device is in educating and creating new perspectives. And I now want to analyze how the satirical tone is placed in American culture.
The satirical tone is used through many different facets and has impacted American culture in many different ways. It is used in:
Political Commentary: Satire is used in political cartoons to satirical new shows and articles, such as The Daily Show or The Onion. This is a way for the people to highlight incompetence, hypocrisy, and many other social issues in a fun-hearted way. It makes many realize the unfairness of situations in an entertaining way. This is a great way to create community engagement with the people.
Social Criticism: Satire is used to criticize social ideals and show the people years of contradictions and absurdities plunged into our society by exaggerating social instances to find the irony and draw attention to social issues. Some of these issues can include, gender equality, crimes, LGTBTQ+ issues, racism, classism, consumerism, etc. This creates a move for social change and a way for the community to be brought together so we can evolve in our mindsets.
There are many more kinds of ways satire is used in our society but these are just a few.
I agree I liked Nacirema because of how eye opening it is. It exposes how self centered some Americans can be and treat other cultures as other. I missed that at first because I didn't recognize that it's satire but thought it was a factual piece.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you related the satirical tone used by the Nacirema to social criticisms and public commentary! I didn't think of how a satirical tone can be used in everyday life to sway the opinions of people and bring new perspectives to light.
