Analysis of Onion
The Onion article I chose to write about today is "Guy Who Sucks At Being A Person Sees Huge Potential In AI."
This article highlights the rapid overtake that recent AI technology has had over the world. The article starts by describing the main character, James Parker, as "a local guy who sucks at being a person" and someone who, by all accounts has never stretched himself to do something he found difficult". This description gives readers the impression that he is generally quite a useless being who doesn’t have anything to show for his life. He doesn't strive for anything and is lazy. Then James is seen to be showing a lot of enthusiasm for AI and thinks this will be very good for humans in the future and that soon humans won't have to do anything at all. The contrast between his description of someone lazy and useless to his excitement about AI shows the irony of the situation. James who is already a lazy being, is given another tool that will promote his laziness and confirms that he will never have to do anything again. This satirical commentary also gives the idea that AI will become a solution for people like James, so they can avoid putting effort into the real world. This article shows that AI is becoming an excuse for people to become dumber and lazier.
Another interesting thing about this article is that they provide a picture of James:
This photo looks very AI-generated in my opinion and doesn’t look like a real human being, I think they added this picture just to show that we don't even need to physically take pictures anymore and show how powerful AI is.
This article was very interesting and had a great satirical tone that unfolded many harsh truths.
I love how you analyzed the picture of James in addition to the article--I agree that using an AI-generated picture (or at least one that resembles AI) is very ironic and adds to the piece. Good eye!
ReplyDeleteI like how you highlighted that the clear contrast between the 2 views is very ironic and adds to the author's purpose of describing the issues with AI.
