Jobs in the US

America was built on rascal values, this is widely known, and the problem of racism has improved so much over the decades but that doesn’t mean it is not still unbearably present in our society.

According to Bowdoin "a study published earlier this year, Assistant Professor of Economics Martin Abel found employers are less likely to call back job applicants with Black-sounding names when presented with identical resumes"

Right now in the 21st century being able to attain a job in this economy is already hard enough but not getting chosen because of race or ethnicity is just double the burden. Even though America has moved past its racist ideals, there is still internalized racism hidden inside many people and it is hindering the success of many people and companies.

"We found that participants systematically discriminated against hob candidates with names they associated with Black People, especially when put under time pressure,"

This shows that even in our modern world, being a different race other than white can decrease your chances of landing a job. Firoozeh Dumas, an Iranian-American writer, wrote that she seemed to get job offers only once she started using her American name, Julie. After using this name on her resume the job offers seemed to be rolling in. This could be a coincidence but through research and general logic, it seems right to assume that employers and companies in America prefer white workers compared to their colored counterparts.

It is 2024, and racism, internalized racism or not should not be occurring. We are a country built on immigrants and we should honor that. People of color should be able to work the same jobs as white people when the credentials are the same.

The fact that this is still occurring seems quite dystopian if you ask me.
