Everything Is Connected
We are currently in the 6th mass extinction. It's crazy, we are all gonna die someday, and sometime in the far far far away future we're gonna cease to exist at all. But the reality for many animals and species on planet earth right now is that they are gonna cease to exist in the near near near future. Of the 200 breeds of domesticated animals that have been identified in North America, 80% of them are either declining or are currently facing extinction. 80%. That's a big number which means about 160 species are declining. It is hard to swallow that type of information. The biggest reasons for that are because of ..... HUMANS. Obviously.
Habitat destruction, climate change, and over-harvesting are just a few reasons as to why all these species are going extinct, but many people know this already. The underlying effects of these extinctions are what many people are not aware of.
What happens when these species start disappearing from their respective ecosystems? These animals and plants can't play their role in their ecosystem anymore. Not being able to participate in their environment disrupts the balance of the whole ecosystem and eventually that will lead to the destruction of the entire environment and the other animals part of it.
Fossil Fuels also play a big role in the decrease in biodiversity. Factories, cars, buildings, homes, farms, etc. all release greenhouse gases, such as methane, CO2, and nitrogen. Releasing all these fuels does regulate our environment to some extent and retain heat, but the overuse of these fossil fuels is leading to climate change. Climate change is of course dramatically changing the weather and how it is acting. Many of these species live in ecosystems that suit their specialized needs and although some can migrate to ecosystems that can provide them with their specific needs, many are not able to migrate with the weather changing all the time and often end up dying due to the climate and weather, therefore leading to decline rates or extinction.
This is all to show that everything is interconnected. Everything we as humans do ends up affecting the environment in some way and even though it doesn’t seem like it our actions end up translating into many different paths and the ending destination is that our planet and the living things inside start dying. Every action has an underlying effect that we would never even think of and that is why it is important to be aware of how our actions affect the world around us and learn how to help the solution.
Some things we can do are support local farms, try to go electric or water-based instead of oil-based, educate ourselves on the sources we are buying from, plant local flowers or plants, learn about our carbon footprint, etc.
